Opening Day 2017
Saturday April 15, 2017 Opening Day, We’ll take it!
The first trip of the year is always an adventure. After checking all systems over the past several weeks and the final sea trial yesterday, we finally took a full compliment of 40 anglers to the fishing grounds. It was a beautiful morning with bright sunshine and calm seas. As the morning progressed, the wind started to kick up, making it a little chilly, but for April, we’ll take it! By the end of the trip and for the ride back to Gloucester, white caps had formed on top of 2-3 foot chop.
The fishing was very good most of the day. We had a mix of haddock and cusk that we were able to keep. Rounding out the catch were some pollock, a small wolf fish, and of course, cod. We had cod on every stop, we decided to leave one spot because of the number of cod being caught, can you imagine being chased from a spot because you are catching cod? High hook had 11 keepers and the pool winner was a 6 lb. haddock. All said, we’ll take it for opening day.
Just a reminder, this is a great time of year to target haddock. We are still working under the 2016 regulations of 15 haddock per person at minimum length of 17 inches. As of May 1, the 2017 regulations will go into effect. They aren’t finalized, but expected haddock bag limit will be reduced to 12 haddock per person at 17 inches and zero cod for the year.
Our next trips are scheduled for next weekend—Friday, Saturday and Sunday—with our great Spring Special of $56 per person. Call soon for reservations, spots are going fast!
